Hurricane-Rated and Impact-Resistant Window Options
First Choice Windows offers both non-impact, hurricane-rated windows and impact-resistant windows and doors. All of the windows we install are Florida-approved, wind-rated products selected to meet the applicable design-pressure requirements for the home.
A design-pressure (DP) rating measures how much wind load a window can handle before the frame, the glass or the hardware fails. Impact resistance is a separate test that measures whether the glass stays in the opening after being struck by flying debris. A window can be hurricane-rated without being impact-resistant, and knowing the difference is the key to comparing quotes accurately.
Hurricane-Rated, Non-Impact Windows
The term “hurricane-rated” is commonly used to describe windows that have been tested and approved to withstand specific wind pressures. These windows are not impact resistant, but they can be an appropriate and code-compliant choice in many of the Central Florida communities we serve.
Non-impact, hurricane-rated windows generally provide a more affordable option for homeowners who want strong, energy-efficient replacement windows without the additional cost of laminated impact glass.
Impact-Resistant Windows
Impact-resistant windows contain laminated glass designed to remain together when struck by windborne debris. Although the glass may crack when impacted, the laminated interlayer helps the glass remain in place and continue covering the opening.
When impact-resistant windows are properly approved for the property and installed according to applicable requirements, they serve as the required opening protection and eliminate the need for separate storm panels or shutters over those protected openings.
Which Option Does Your Home Need?
Impact-resistant glass is not required for most homes in inland areas of Central Florida. Requirements may be different for coastal properties and homes located within designated wind-borne debris regions, including certain areas in and around Crystal River and Citrus County.
Whether impact protection is required depends on the property’s exact location, the applicable building code, the wind zone, design pressures, and local permitting requirements. We confirm what applies to your address during the free estimate, before you choose a product.
Even when impact-resistant glass is not required, some homeowners still prefer it for the additional protection and convenience it can provide. Impact-resistant windows may offer:
- Additional protection from windborne debris
- Less storm preparation
- Laminated glass that helps remain together if broken
- Increased resistance to forced entry
- Additional reduction of some outside noise
- Protection that remains in place throughout the year

Insurance Credits and the My Safe Florida Home Program
Wind Mitigation Credits
Florida insurance companies offer discounts or credits for qualifying hurricane-mitigation features, including documented opening protection. A wind-mitigation inspection records the protective features currently installed on your home.
The amount of any credit varies by insurance carrier, policy, inspection results, and the other mitigation features on the home. Replacing windows alone may not change your premium. First Choice Windows can provide the applicable product documentation, but only your insurance carrier or agent can determine whether you qualify for a credit and how it may affect your premium.
My Safe Florida Home
The My Safe Florida Home program offers free wind-mitigation inspections and grant assistance of up to $10,000 for eligible homeowners and approved hurricane-hardening improvements, including qualifying opening protection. Eligibility, available funding, and approved improvements are determined solely by the program.
Homeowners must apply directly through the My Safe Florida Home program, complete all required steps, and receive official grant approval before any work begins. Beginning work before receiving approval may disqualify the homeowner from reimbursement. Visit mysafeflhome.com for current program information and to apply.
First Choice Windows does not administer the My Safe Florida Home program and is not an agent of the Florida Department of Financial Services. Eligibility, award amounts and insurance credits are determined by the state and by your insurance carrier.
Available in Every Window Style We Offer
Wind rating and impact protection are glass and frame options, not window shapes. You do not have to give up the look of your home to get either one.

Bay and Bow Windows
Large multi-panel units on the front of the house are usually the biggest single opening you own. They are also the most visible upgrade you can make.

Architectural and Shaped
Arches, radius tops and gable-end shapes are all buildable as storm-rated units. Odd shapes are where cheap quotes tend to fall apart.

Single Hung and Sliders
The everyday workhorses. Most whole-home replacements in Central Florida are built around these two styles.
You Are Not Stuck With White
Almost every hurricane window photo you will find online shows a white vinyl frame, which leaves a lot of homeowners assuming that is the only option. It is not.
Bronze and darker exterior finishes are available, and on a stucco home with arched openings the difference is dramatic. The windows below are storm-rated units on a home right here in the area.

Hurricane and Impact Window Questions We Get in Central Florida
Do I have to buy impact windows?
No. First Choice Windows installs both hurricane-rated non-impact windows and impact-resistant windows and doors. Impact-resistant glass is not required for most homes in inland Central Florida, and a non-impact, hurricane-rated window is often an appropriate and code-compliant choice. We will explain what your address requires and what each option costs, so you can choose based on your location, your priorities and your budget.
What is the difference between hurricane-rated and impact-resistant windows?
Hurricane-rated describes a window that has been tested and approved to withstand specific wind pressures, measured as a design-pressure or DP rating. Impact-resistant describes glass that has also been tested against windborne debris and uses a laminated interlayer, so it remains in place after it is struck. A window can be hurricane-rated without being impact-resistant. When you compare quotes, ask which one you are being given.
Are impact-resistant windows required in Ocala and Marion County?
Not for most homes. Much of inland Central Florida sits outside the designated wind-borne debris regions where impact-rated glazing or approved shutters are required. Requirements may be different for coastal properties and for homes in and around Crystal River and Citrus County. Every replacement window still has to meet the design-pressure requirements for its wind zone and still needs a permit. We confirm the requirements for your specific address during the estimate.
Will new windows lower my insurance?
They can, but it is not automatic. Florida carriers offer wind mitigation credits based on a wind mitigation inspection report. How much you save depends on your carrier, your policy, and what else on the home has been hardened, including the roof and the garage door. Windows alone do not always change the premium. We provide the product approval documentation your inspector needs, and your agent can tell you what it is worth on your policy.
Do I still need shutters if I have impact-resistant windows?
Generally no. When impact-resistant windows are properly approved for the property and installed according to applicable requirements, they serve as the required opening protection and eliminate the need for separate storm panels or shutters over those protected openings. Openings that are not covered by impact-resistant products may still need protection.
How much do hurricane-rated and impact-resistant windows cost?
It depends on the number of openings, the sizes, the shapes, and whether you choose non-impact hurricane-rated windows or impact-resistant units. Non-impact hurricane-rated windows are generally the more affordable option. Arched and custom-shaped units cost more than rectangles. The only honest number is the one that comes after somebody measures your house, which is why the in-home estimate is free.
How long does installation take?
Most whole-home projects run one to three days on site. The longer part is manufacturing lead time after you order, which varies by season and by product line. Hurricane season is the busy stretch, so ordering in the winter or spring usually means a shorter wait.
Do you handle the permits?
Yes. We pull the permits and schedule the county inspections as part of the job. You should be skeptical of any window quote in Florida that does not include permitting, because unpermitted window work can create problems at resale and with insurance claims.
